In this article I am going to introduce you into Machine Learning in a very simple yet informative way. By the end of it you should have a better understanding of what do we mean by machine learning, its applications, its types:

Machine learning (ML), as defined by Tom Mitchell, is the study of computer algorithms that can improve automatically through experience and by the use of data.

To better understand take a look at the below Venn diagram by Michael Barber which illustrates where Machine Learning lies with respect to Data Science. Simply, Machine Learning, is the area of Data Science that is the intersection of Computer Science and Math/Stats, in other words: to train computer models/functions using mathematical and statistical methods in order to make data observations, predictions and analysis. Let’s take a look at the different types of machine learning applications these days and understand the motivation behind using ML altogether.
